Vaquero Days Roping Details

General

  • October 15/16/17 2010
  • Granville Martin Ranch/Museum, Descanso, California
  • Books will open at 7:00 AM and close at 9:00 AM each day. Roping starts at 8:00 AM each day.
  • Judge’s Meeting will take place 15 minutes prior to the start of each event to lay out the rules and answer questions.
  • This year, the events are designed to focus on horsemanship and teamwork.
  • Slick horns and 50’ minimum rope length are required.
  • Traditional gear is appreciated and encouraged.
  • There will be a saddle awarded to the individual high point roper. To qualify for high point, the competitor must enter all events (except beginner events). Points will be tallied from 1st to 10th place with 10 points being awarded to 1st place, 9 points to 2nd place, etc.
  • The number of times each competitor can enter will be determined at the time of the competition.
  • The judge’s decision is final.
  • Any form of animal abuse will result in disqualification.
  • All competitors, their friends, and family members, must purchase a wristband to enter the grounds – cost is $10.

 

Friday

Piales: Steer will be brought at a run from a corral into the arena. The roper will be in the arena next to the gate. The steer must be roped by 2 hind feet and stopped before it crosses a pre-designated line (approx. 50 feet from the gate). The horse cannot cross another pre-designated line (approx 8 feet from the gate).

1-man Tie Down – This event is judged with time being a consideration. There is a 5 minute time limit. Cattle must be roped by 1 or 2 hind feet not roped by the head. Cattle will be laid down or tailed down not jerked down or tripped.

Ride for the Brand: a 3-man team must head, heel, and set ropes, on as many cattle as possible in 10 minutes. The team that ropes the most cattle wins.

Saturday

3-man Doctoring (Open): 2 head

1st head – Scoop Loop
2nd head – Backwards Swing

  • Cattle will be laid down horseback, e.g. headed and heeled with the prescribed loop and then roped by one or two front feet by any loop or a front foot trapped by the header. After the 1-minute warning, the third man can tail the steer down. Five minute time limit per round.
  • Each team will get 20 seconds off their time for each reata used in each round.
  • Additional prizes for Best Head Shot and Best Heel Shot.
  • The Top 10  teams will have a rope off on Sunday. Calcutta at noon and rope at 1:00 pm.

3-man Doctoring (Beginners) – 2 head

1st head – Free Choice
2nd head – Side Arm

  • Cattle will be laid down horseback, e.g. headed and heeled with the prescribed loop and then roped by one or two front feet by any loop or a front foot trapped by the header. After the 1-minute warning, the third man can tail the steer down. 5 minute time limit.
  • The beginner team can have one Open roper who does not pay an entry fee and does not share in the jackpot.
  • Each team will get 20 seconds off their time for each reata used in each round.
  • Additional prizes for Best Head Shot and Best Heel Shot.

Sunday

Reata Roping – type of jackpot to be announced. This is a judged event.

Calcutta for Top 10 teams from Saturday’s competition at Noon.

For the final round, the shot to be thrown will be drawn from a hat. It will either be Free Choice or a Roll Over.

Top 10 Teams return at 1:00 pm.
